Song Review: The Killers Make Their Return with "Caution" and Former Fleetwood Mac Guitarist

After releasing and securing the top spot on the Billboard 200 with their fifth studio album Wonderful Wonderful in 2017, spearheaded by new wave/disco-rock lead single “The Man”, things went relatively quiet for The Killers.

Now, just as the four-piece announced a new worldwide tour, the band shares the lead effort off upcoming sixth album Imploding the Mirage. “Caution”, featuring a one-minute solo from former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, excitedly transports listeners back to the Sam’s Town era with grandiose instrumentals and creative ambition.

The classic rock vibe, bombastic chorus, and lyrical content simply waiting to be interpreted in numerous ways, pairs -- well? -- with the current COVID-19 environment in which The Killers decided to release the new single. “Caution” is far from political though. In fact, it tells the story of a woman from the desert trying to make it out of a suffocating town.

Lead vocalist Brandon Flowers sings of throwing caution to the wind over hypnotic synths, connecting the song’s overall message to his own recent decision to move his family out of Las Vegas and to the mountains of Utah. Interestingly, Imploding the Mirage will be The Killers’ first album recorded outside the neon lights of Sin City.

“I’m throwin' caution, what's it gonna be?, tonight the winds of change are blowing wild and free, if I don't get out, out of this town, I just might be the one who finally burns it down,” he warns on the chorus.

As “Caution” follows the aforementioned woman working to rewrite her supposed predetermined path, she is adamant about no longer allowing the crushing wheel of life defeat her. And while The Killers advocate for risk-taking and remaining fearless in the midst of the unknown, that's probably not the best plan of action as the world partakes in “social distancing” and “self-isolation” measures.

"Caution" finds the band going back to a formula that works after admitting "their heart" just wasn't in the material presented on their previous full length album. The new song release portrays the weird and downtrodden as heroes, emphasizes telling a story through instrumentals, and brings The Killers back into the realm of retro rock, where they excel the most.
