| Posted: 02 Nov 2017 12:00 AM PDT  A new trove of documents and intelligence found at Osama bin Laden's Pakistan compound have shed light on the al-Qaeda leader's film collection while in hiding. The files, released by the CIA on Wednesday, showed a number of films and documentaries discovered at the compound, including children's movies and a documentary entitled 'Where in the World is Osama bin Laden?' The nearly 470,000 released documents provide an insight into al-Qaeda's operations in the lead-up to bin Laden's death, such as its secret dealing with Iran, as well his private and family life. The documents represent the fourth release of materials found after the raid by US Navy Seals of bin Laden's isolated compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, in May 2011. The al-Qaeda leader was shot dead by Navy Seal Robert O'Neill as the building was stormed at night and later buried at sea. Mike Pompeo, CIA Director, said: "Today's release of recovered al-Qaeda letters, videos, audio files and other materials provides the opportunity for the American people to gain further insights into the plans and workings of this terrorist organization."  In his latter years, bin Laden was confined to the 38,000sqft three-storeyy compound without an internet or phone connection, as he sought the evade the huge intelligence efforts trying to hunt him down. As part of the release, the CIA published a list of copyrighted material found on a computer at the compound, which gives an insight into the films and programmes in bin Laden's collection. Among them were children's movies Antz, Cars and Chicken Little as well as titles Batman Gotham Knight, The Three Musketeers and Resident Evil. The al-Qaeda founder also appears to have taken a keen interest in his own portrayal in the media with documentaries Where in the World is Osama bin Laden?, Biography – Osama bin Laden, In the Footsteps of bin Laden and CNN Presents: World's Most Wanted. There was also more general interest viewing found at the compound including National Geographic documentaries Kung Fu Killers and Inside the Green Berets as well as Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Yesterday the CIA also released rare footage of Osama bin Laden's son and heir apparent, Hamza, on his wedding day. Until now, the public has only seen childhood pictures of him. Hamza bin Laden is seen by many as a potential successor to his father, and is expected to rise to prominence in the jihadist movement. He is being closely watched as the rival Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) group suffers setbacks in the Middle East. The new CIA documents also showed that in his later years Osama bin Laden was preoccupied with trying to prevent splits in al-Qaeda and was still active in its propaganda efforts such as plans to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. |
