"That's My Girl" by Fifth Harmony - Song Review

The girls of Fifth Harmony are anxiously counting down the days till the May 27th release of sophomore album 7/27. Over the last few months, eager listeners have been treated to sultry lead single "Work From Home" (now the act's highest charting single to date) and promotional singles "The Life" and "Write On Me". Now, with the new release right around the corner, three more diverse album cuts have surfaced, including official second single "All In My Head (Flex)" featuring Fetty Wap.

Though three new songs have unexpectedly appeared in front of all us mere peasants from the glittering pop heavens above, including the album's next single, let's focus on the best of the bunch, shall we? Yes, "All In My Head (Flex)" is a decent, summer-ready, radio tune and Missy Elliott's guest verse on "Not My Kinda Girl" is worth a couple of listens, but it's the brass-heavy, pop-leaning opener "That's My Girl" that truly steals the spotlight.

Constructed as a potential radio smash patiently waiting in the wings, the production of "That's My Girl" is loud and infectious, built around a refreshing saxophone-assisted beat and a chant worthy chorus that screams for female unity and empowerment, as well as a fierce stomp down the nearest runway. Similar in style and message to that of a Pussycat Dolls track, specifically "I Don't Need a Man", the new song effortlessly mixes Fifth Harmony's pop sensibility with their contagious R&B attitude and energy.

The message of picking your fellow woman back up on her feet, letting her know that no man is worth the hurt, is inspiring and has the ability to resonate with many of the girl group's fan base. "Destiny said it, you got to get up and get it, get mad independent and don't you ever forget it, got some dirt on your shoulder, then let me brush it off for ya," they sing on a fast paced hook, just before they burst into an explosive chorus that's destined to be heard on every car radio throughout the summer.

Though "Work From Home" has proven to be a huge success, it seems the girls have encountered some difficulty on trying to capitalize with a worthy follow-up. Even "All In My Head (Flex)" seems to be lacking something special. But not "That's My Girl". From the jazz-influenced production work to the confident vocal delivery of all five members, the track has everything required to receive the single treatment, and then to dominate the charts. It's surprisingly motivating and a perfect showcase of where the girls came from, and the heights they are bound to achieve.
