Brandon Flowers' "Can't Deny My Love" - Single Review

It's not like the handsome Brandon Flowers has been away from the spotlight entirely. His incredible band, The Killers, released the solid Battle Born in 2012 and followed it up with their first greatest hits album in 2013. Hard to believe that Hot Fuss, possibly my favorite album ever, first came into my life way back in 2004. Time flies.

However, Flowers has unfortunately put his solo work on hold since the release of his unappreciated debut album, Flamingo, in 2010 in order to fulfill commitments with his band. That is all going to change with the announcement of a hiatus for The Killers and news of his sophomore record The Desired Effect with its lead single, "Can't Deny My Love".

The new single, officially released today, is a bold, 80s retro rock, synth-pop creation mixed in with some 70s disco inspiration and a supporting layered choir just for the hell of it. With the first few notes, listeners could expect the typical alternative rock sound of The Killers, but Flowers' impeccable, seductive vocals paired with those of his backing female vocalists has it tailored for massive crossover potential.

"Can't Deny My Love" was an anticipated release, teased by countless video clips from the upcoming music video, and Flowers' certainly did not disappoint. While production and vocal performances from all involved are strong and on point, the highlight of the new single is the vivid, somewhat somber, songwriting. "When you close your eyes, tell me what you see, locked up in your room, is there any room for me?," Flowers questions before the heart-pounding chorus kicks in.

Flowers' new album is one of the most buzzed about projects set to be released in 2015. "Can't Deny My Love" is keeping that buzz moving in a very positive direction and demanding radio attention. The artist has a way to convey emotion and tell stories with his songwriting. The new single is no different. Always evolving his sound, the pop-leaning rock track is a brilliant piece of work from The Killers' frontman.

And just because it's a good, often overlooked gem that highlights Flowers' pitch perfect vocals... take another listen to "Here With Me", the final single taken off The Killers' 2012 album, Battle Born. So good.

UPDATE (04/13/2015): Flowers' continues to promote his upcoming sophomore album with the release of a supporting music video for apparent second single "Still Want You", a catchy and charming track where the artist sings that he still wants his lover no matter the circumstance. It's a good song, but hopefully Flowers has not given up on the brilliant "Can't Deny My Love" just yet. Watch the new video below.

UPDATE #2 (04/27/2015): Flowers' is not slowing down. The Killers' frontman has just released his third The Desired Effect (out May 19) smash in the form of the retro-pop "Lonely Town", along with a fun, throwback supporting video which shows a girl dancing around her house with her Walk-man on. On the surface, an adorable love song, but with a few more listens the track takes on a stalker-like approach. The video touches on this aspect. Flowers used Auto-Tune for the first time, to his advantage, as the new single fights to stay lodged in one's head all day.
